Oak Class - Reception 2025 - 2026

Mr Harley

Teacher: Mr Harley

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Bradley, Miss Jones, Mrs Srivastav and Miss Lees

We hope the children enjoy the learning and experiences that they have in the summer term just as much as they have enjoyed the rest of the year.

In the first half of the summer term, our class topic will be Minibeasts. The children will be learning about the natural world and exploring our school grounds to look for minibeasts and their habitats. We will be using lots of hands-on activities, including making journey sticks, and the children will be learning through play and exploration.

As part of our learning, the children will be caring for caterpillars in the classroom. They will enjoy watching them grow and change, learning about their life cycle as they turn into butterflies. Once the butterflies are ready, we will release them into the wild.

We will be sharing the story The Extraordinary Gardener by Sam Boughton. The children will be learning how to write simple instructions, such as how to plant and care for a seed. To support this, the children will plant their own sunflower seeds and look after them. When the seedlings are ready to go outside, we will plant them in a flowerbed in the school garden and see whose sunflower grows the tallest by the end of the school year.

In maths, we will begin by learning about 3D shapes and then move on to working with numbers to 20. The children will be practising counting, recognising numbers and developing their understanding of number patterns. More information about our maths learning can be found on the White Rose Education website.

In the second half of the summer term, our topic will be Marine Life. We will be reading The Storm Whale by Benji Davies and taking part in lots of exciting activities, such as designing and making boats. The children will also explore floating and sinking using different materials.

We will be getting creative by drawing and painting sea creatures and, where possible, joining materials together to make our own marine animals.

We have a fun and exciting term ahead, full of learning through play and exploration.

If you would like to talk about your child’s learning, please feel free to speak to me after school or email me at gharley@stannesfulshaw.net.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards,

Mr Harley
