PE
Intent
At St Anne’s Fulshaw C of E Primary School, our intention is to deliver a high‑quality Physical Education curriculum that inspires children and enables them to succeed and excel in competitive sport and a wide range of physically demanding activities. Our curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ physical confidence in ways that support their health, fitness and emotional wellbeing.
We aim to nurture children’s enjoyment of physical activity by offering opportunities for participation in both intra‑school and inter‑school sport. We believe competition plays a vital role in building character and embedding core values such as fairness, respect and teamwork.
Implementation
To ensure that all pupils receive equal access to the full breadth of the curriculum throughout their time at St Anne’s Fulshaw C of E Primary School, we have a two-year rolling programme of study across Key Stage 1 and 2.
In the Early Years, the curriculum focuses on developing core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, coordination and agility through play-based and structured physical activities.
To ensure high‑quality provision, the PE subject leader:
- supports teachers with planning
- reviews and updates policy when needed
- observes lessons and provides feedback
- analyses assessment outcomes to identify strengths and areas for development
Specialist-led sessions, enrichment activities and trips are organised in partnership with the headteacher to further strengthen the curriculum. Samples of pupils’ work are collected from each class, providing an overview of coverage, progression and attainment. Teachers assess pupils against end‑of‑key‑stage expectations, with outcomes recorded on Insight Tracking to give a clear view of performance across the school.
Impact
The majority of pupils leave St Anne’s Fulshaw C of E Primary School with skills that are at or above age‑related expectations in Physical Education. All pupils take part in our annual intra‑school competitions, and almost all represent the school in external sporting events and festivals.
Strong partnerships with local sports clubs and coaches mean that many pupils continue to pursue sporting interests outside school, with a significant number going on to compete for local teams.
Our annual Sports Week is a much‑valued highlight of the year. It provides every pupil with the chance to experience a wide variety of sports, both onsite and offsite, broadening horizons and encouraging children to discover new interests and talents.
